Lucite CP Technical Data

  • Properties...

    • Lucite® CP acrylic sheet is a continuously processed product which exhibits outstanding optical properties, uniform thickness and low stress level. Lucite® CP acrylic sheet is a lightweight, weather- resistant thermoplastic.  It can be easily fabricated, formed, finished, cemented, painted and decorated.
  • Safety...

    • Lucite® CP acrylic sheet will provide greater safety than annealed glass in glazing applications because of its greater breakage resistance.  Lucite® CP acrylic sheet complies to American National Standard Z 97.1 - 1984 Safety Glazing requirements.  For safety considerations in handling Lucite® CP acrylic sheet, contact Lucite Technical Services.
  • Light Transmission...

    • Clear, colorless Lucite® CP acrylic sheet has a luminous transmittance of 92%.  It is clearer than glass and will not yellow under normal exposure.
  • Weather Resistance...

    • Lucite® CP acrylic sheet will withstand exposure to blazing sun, extreme cold, sudden temperature changes, salt water spray, etc.
  • Lightweight...

    • Lucite® CP acrylic sheet is light, having only half the weight of glass and 43% the weight of aluminum.
  • Rigidity...

    • Lucite® CP acrylic sheet does not have the rigidity of glass or metals.  However, it is more rigid than many other transparent plastics such as acetates, butyrates, polycarbonate, polyester, and SAN.
  • Cold Flow...

    • Large panels of Lucite® CP acrylic sheet, installed horizontally, may deform or sag permanently due to prolonged or continuous loads such as snow, or its own weight if insufficiently supported.  This cold flow of plastic may be overcome by forming the sheet with reinforcing features such as ribs or curvatures.
  • Strength and Stiffness...

    • Lucite® CP acrylic sheet has a typical tensile strength of 10,300 psi and a typical stiffness of 535,000 psi at 73° F (23° C).
  • Building Code Approval...

    • Lucite® CP acrylic sheet has been accepted for use by the major building codes:  ICBO, BOCA, and SBCC, and has been used successfully and safely in jurisdictions throughout the USA.
  • Heat Resistance...
    • Lucite® CP acrylic sheet can be used  at temperatures  from -30° F to 190° F (-34° C to + 88° C) depending on the application.  IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT TEMPERATURES DO NOT EXCEED 160° F (71° C) FOR CONTINUOUS SERVICE, OR 190° F (88° C) FOR SHORT DURATION, INTERMITTENT USE.  Components made from Lucite® CP acrylic sheet should not be exposed to high  heat sources, such as high wattage incandescent lamps, unless the product assembly provides adequate ventilation to permit dissipation of heat.
  • Fire Precautions...
    • Use acrylic sheet only in accordance with local Building Codes and manufacturer's specifications.  Combustibility test data for Lucite® CP acrylic sheet of 3.2 mm thickness are:
    • Self-ignition temp     ASTM D-1929   820° F (437° C)
    • Rate of burning        ASTM D-635     1.20 in./min.
    • Smoke density         ASTM D-2843   5.7%
